Egypt to host donors conference for Gaza reconstruction

Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Wednesday that Egypt will be hosting a donors conference for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip on October 12 in Cairo.

The international conference, which will be chaired by both Egypt and Norway, aims to boost funding for the reconstruction of Gaza which saw major vital infrastructure destroyed during Israel’s seven-week military operations.

News of the donors conference was announced after Norway’s foreign minister held talks with Egypt’s President and foreign minister.

Earlier this week, following a meeting with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said reconstruction would cost up to $US 7.8 billion.

According to the Palestinian Authority, based in the West Bank, the costs of rebuilding 17,000 homes destroyed by Israeli operations would be $US 2.5 billion wihle another $US 250 million are needed to repair Gaza’s damaged energy sector.

At least 500,000 Palestinians were left displaced following the seven-week conflict. More than 300,000 were seeking shelter at UNRWA shelters during the conflict.

Official figures have stated that more than 2,100 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed during Israel’s military operations. Another 11,000 Palestinians were also injured. Meanwhile, 64 Israeli soldiers and five Israeli civilians were among those killed.
