Egypt’s Women Bikers Break Gender Barriers

June 20, 2016

As Egyptian women continue to challenge gender stereotypes and break barriers by engaging in activities typically associated with men, a group of Egyptian women have garnered attention for riding motorbikes.

In a video by Reuters, a group of women share their experience with riding motorbikes in Egypt, despite the activity stereotypically being viewed as one men, rather than women, would engage in and enjoy.

“I don’t find it strange; women can do everything,” said one of the women from the biker group. “I don’t know why it’s strange; maybe because motorbikes are big, [people assume] it needs muscular men to ride them. This is not true.”

With the aim of inspiring other women to break the gender barrier surrounding the activity, the group of women organize weekly bike rides across the country.

Watch the video above for more on the women bikers.
