A New Hijabi Emoji is Coming Up on iPhones

July 26, 2017

A new Hijabi emoji has been approved to be released on the latest update to the iOS later this year.

Rayouf Alhumedhi proposed the idea of a character wearing hijab after she found no emoji to represent her. “I just wanted an emoji of me,” says Alhumedhi.

“The fact that there wasn’t an emoji to represent me and the millions of other hijabi women across the world was baffling to me. I really had no initial idea in my mind of what it was supposed to look like, I just wanted it to be available in different skin tones — millions of women from different races do wear it,” adds Alhumedhi told CNN in an interview
Among the list of introductions are “person with headscarf”, “breastfeeding”, “bearded person” and “older adult”. Headscarf and beard had been among the most requested new icons.

In celebration of World Emoji Day on July 17, Apple revealed plans to roll out 56 new emoji approved by the Unicode Consortium, the nonprofit corporation that reviews and develops new emojis.“With thousands of emojis available on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac, there are many ways to add personality to every message,” Apple stated on its official website.
