In a heart-warming video, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario’s Premier Kathleen Wynne personally greeted Syrian refugees upon arrival in Toronto.
In a video (above) that has since gone viral, Prime Minister Trudeau chats with a family through a translator before handing them jackets to stay warm for winter.
“You are home. Welcome home,” said Trudeau to the family at Pearson International Airport just before midnight.
Trudeau also shared a touching moment with the family when he managed to make the family’s young daughter smile after gifting her with a teddy bear.
The first plane of Syrian refugees to Canada landed on Thursday. The Prime Minister, joined by a number of ministers, welcomed 163 refugees.
“We get to show not just a planeload of new Canadians what Canada’s all about but we get to show the world how to open our hearts and welcome in people who are fleeing extraordinary difficult situations,” said Trudeau at a press conference.
Canada’s Prime Minister has pledged to bring in 25,000 refugees to the country by the end of February.
