The UN Refugee Agency announced on Thursday the appointment of Syrian refugee and Olympic athlete Yusra Mardini as a Goodwill Ambassador.
Mardini, along with her sister, have helped save a boat carrying Syrian refugees in 2015; they swam for three hours in the sea to save the sinking boat and push it to land.
In 2016, she has been selected for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and became an Olympic swimmer.
Mardini has worked closely with UNHCR; the young Syrian refugee has been an active participant and advocate for the rights of refugees to have access to safe shelter, education and livelihood.
Mardini says “I could not be more proud to be part of the UNHCR family and #TeamRefugees,” reported by United Nations. “I want to encourage all refugees to continue with education and not stop at one point in their lives.”
