Police Officer Killed In Cairo Blast

February 13, 2015

Police officer Mostafa Shamees has died of his injuries after being wounded in an explosion in Cairo’s Ain Shams, said the Ministry of Interior.

The explosion, which occurred after an improvised explosive device went off, injured eight other policemen and one civilian, said Egypt’s Ministry of Health.

Shamees, who was ranked Lieutenant, belonged to the Central Security Forces department, said a police statement.

A terror group that goes by the name ‘Ajnad Misr’ has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

Since the ouster of former President Mohammed Morsi, Egypt has witnessed a wave of  violence, often targeting security forces.

A fact-sheet prepared by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs put the death toll for terrorism acts which took place since January 2011 and until April 2014 at 971, including 664 security personnel.
