3- Foreign is a Better Escape

The most interesting observation of Egyptians’ TV habits might just be their preference for foreign shows. While Netflix and other streaming services offer, as of late, popular Arabic and Egyptian series and movies, none of those productions showed up in the Top Netflix lists or the individuals researched’s favorites.

Perhaps Egyptians simply choose to watch Egyptian content with a traditional TV setup rather than streaming, or perhaps non Egyptian content can better transport us into an entirely new foreign world.

One of the American shows capable of that escape is fan favorite Breaking Bad, a 2008-2013 Crime Drama about a chemist that gets into the meth-making business to repay his medical debt. While there is little that is Egyptian about Breaking Bad, a 2019 Egyptian production titled “Weld El-Ghalaba” allegedly copied its storyline starrying Ahmed El-Sakka. However, the show did not receive the same level of success as Breaking Bad.
