Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Cairo on Tuesday, 15 September, for an official two-day visit to Egypt. During the scheduled visit, Abbas is set to hold talks with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi at the Al-Ittihadiya Palace on Wednesday.
The Egyptian presidency said the leaders will discuss bilateral relations and developments related to a range of regional and international issues.
According to reports from Wikalat al-Anba al-Filastiniya (WAFA), Abbas’ agenda is focused on exploring ways to support Egypt’s efforts by working with regional and international partners to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to Palestinians.
The discussions are expected to include support for the reconstruction of areas damaged by the ongoing conflict, as well as efforts to mobilize collective action to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
A key focus of the visit is the push to advance the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Abbas is also expected to meet Arab League Secretary General Nabil El Fahmy at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo during the course of his visit.
Abbas’ arrival was met at the Cairo International Airport by Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk, Egypt’s Ambassador to Palestine Bassem Abdel Hadi, and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Palestinian Embassy in Egypt, Ambassador Naji Al-Naji.
Abbas is accompanied by Vice President Hussein Al-Sheikh, who also serves as Deputy Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee, along with Rawhi Fattouh, Chairman of the Palestinian National Council.
