An unexpected digital billboard hack in Giza has caught attention after inappropriate footage appeared on a large advertising screen on Thursday, October 29.
Egypt’s Ministry of Interior has now revealed what happened, explaining that the incident was linked to a cyberattack on an international advertising provider.
According to the ministry, the billboard is owned by an advertising company that works with an international provider to display digital advertisements. However, the provider’s website was hacked, causing the footage to appear on the Giza screen and several other digital billboards in different countries at the same time.
Following the incident, the advertising company suspended broadcasts across its screens while working to address the security breach and restore normal service.
The ministry also confirmed that legal measures have been taken in response to the incident.
October 2026 has become an alarming month for the global cybersecurity industry, with a series of significant cyberattacks, security breaches, and software vulnerabilities affecting companies, technology platforms, and government organisations.
The situation has increasingly been described as “Black October”, a term used by cybersecurity experts and online technology communities to describe the unusually high number of cyber incidents reported during the month.
The situation escalated around October 17–21, when several major security incidents were reported within just a few days. One of the most concerning developments involved PHP2Shell, two critical vulnerabilities discovered in PHP, a programming language used by approximately 70% of websites worldwide. These vulnerabilities could allow hackers to remotely take control of affected servers.
