Egypt’s Ramy Elgazar Defeats Eight-Time Defending Sumo Champion At US Open

Mongolian legend and eight-time defending heavyweight gold medalist Byambajar ‘Byamba’ Ulambayar has lost in a shock defeat to Egypt’s Ramy Elgazar in an event that saw 3,000 fans converge upon the 15th annual US Sumo Open. Held at the Walter Pyramid, also known as ‘the Pyramid’, at Long Beach State, the venue’s name was fitting for the Egyptian who ended the Mongolian’s long streak. Byamba had won every single heavyweight crown over the last eight years and is a four-time World Sumo champion. However, late last week, Byamba met his match, as Elgazar forced him outside the ring and claimed his first US Sumo Open gold medal. Seconds after he was announced as the victor, Elgazar fell the floor and kissed the mat, elated to be the US Sumo Open’s new heavyweight champion. Yet, Elgazar’s incredible and surprise victory over Byamba was not the only Egyptian success at the 15th US Sumo Open. Ramy Belal found himself champion of the middleweights, grabbing a gold medal in that division after defeating Mongolia’s Bayarnmunkh Bavuudorj. The victory marked Ramy Belal’s second gold medal in the middleweight division of the US Open….
