The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack at a security checkpoint near Egypt’s St Catherine’s monastery, according to the terrorist group’s news agency Amaq. The attack has left one police officer killed and four other injured. The statement reads, “A security source told Amaq that the attack had been executed by militants of IS” unlike its previous statements that explicitly claimed responsibility for the group’s attack. This statement was based on quotes from an anonymous source. According to a statement released by the Ministry of Interior (MoI), a crossfire took place between militants and security forces. However, the security forces gained control and militants fled. The attack comes over a week following another IS attacks on Tanta’s St George’s church and Alexandria’s St Marks church.
