Among the statues of ancient pharaohs, tomb paintings, and mummies is to be found a pair of Mo Salah’s mint green football boots – conveniently juxtaposed with a pair of ancient Egyptian sandals.

Salah’s Adidas X17 Deadly Strike boots, which were specifically moulded to fit the star’s feet, have been donated by Adidas to celebrate Salah winning the Golden Boot award for being the this season’s top scoring Premier League player.

“This acquisition brings the British Museum’s world-famous Egyptian collection right up to date,” stated Neal Spencer, the museum’s keeper of ancient Egypt and Sudan. “The boots tell a story of a modern Egyptian icon, performing in the UK, with a truly global impact.”

The donation, which is the first pair of football boots to enter the museum – is part of the museum’s wider modern Egypt project, which aims to bolster its collection of contemporary Egyptian material, helping to bring its story of Egypt’s history to the modern day.

The unused boots will be displayed from 24th May in Room 61, a gallery displaying the tomb-chapel paintings of a wealthy Egyptian official, Nebamun.
