Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim agreed on the need to de-escalate tensions and prioritize diplomacy in addressing regional and international issues during talks in Putrajaya on Saturday, 10 October.
Speaking at a joint press conference during his state visit to Malaysia, El-Sisi said the approach would contribute to achieving regional peace and stability.
The two leaders announced the elevation of bilateral relations between Egypt and Malaysia to a strategic partnership in a joint statement issued on Saturday, according to Malaysia’s national news agency, Bernama.
They also witnessed the exchange of four memoranda of understanding covering women’s empowerment, higher education, tourism and investment.
The Egyptian president expressed Egypt’s interest in strengthening bilateral relations with Malaysia across various fields. He pointed to cooperation in energy and renewable energy, manufacturing, electronics, agriculture and food industries.
Both sides agreed to convene the second Joint Commission Meeting and the second round of Bilateral Consultations at the earliest opportunity, according to the joint statement.
The two-day visit, held on 9 and 10 October at the invitation of Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim, is El-Sisi’s first state visit to Malaysia since he assumed office in June 2014.
The visit follows earlier efforts to strengthen relations between the two countries. During Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Cairo in November 2024, the two leaders agreed to work toward elevating bilateral ties to a strategic partnership.
Economic cooperation between the countries has also expanded. Bilateral trade reached approximately USD 720 million (EGP 37.7 billion) in 2025. Trade between January and August 2026 increased by 74.7 percent year-on-year to about USD 870 million (EGP 45.6 billion), already exceeding the full-year 2025 total, according to figures reported by Bernama.
