Video released on social media has shown teenagers shooting an air gun’s plastic pellets at two lions at Egypt’s Giza Zoo during the first day of Eid. The video, which shows the lions in a cramped metal cage, show the teenagers firing the plastic rounds at the agitated lions while a guard idly stands by and teenagers joyfully cheer on the abuse. Among the reactions to the abuse were other onlookers calling for the shooter to “shoot again.” The incident has attracted widespread criticism and calls for authorities to take action against the Zoo and to prevent further abuse. The incident has also revealed the poor conditions in which animals in Egypt’s biggest zoo are held.
