Nineteen senior citizens have died in Egypt on Monday, raising the death toll from scorching hot weather across this week to 40.
According to Egypt’s Ministry of Health, 92 people experienced heat-related fatigue and received medical attention. The latest deaths include 11 who died in Cairo, while the rest are from cities across Egypt.
According to Aswat Masriya, the deaths also include three patients who died at the Khanka Psychiatric Hospital, north of Cairo. Fifteen other patients at the psychiatric hospital were transferred to other hospitals due to the hospital’s inability to cope with rising temperatures.
The latest deaths come a day after the Ministry of Health had announced 21 senior citizens died and 69 were hospitalized after suffering from heat related incidents.
Following the deaths, Egypt’s Ministry of Health has urged citizens to take greater precautions, including drinking more water and attempting to remain in the shade throughout the day.
The Ministry identified children, those at an advanced age and those suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes as those most likely to be impacted by the soaring temperatures.
The Ministry also recommended that people remain indoors when the heat is at its peak unless it is necessary to leave.
Egypt’s heat wave is predicted to continue for at least another week. Temperatures in Cairo are expected to reach 42℃, while cities such as Luxor are experiencing temperatures north of 47℃.
