A roadside bomb detonated remotely killed an Egyptian police officer and a soldier in Egypt’s North Sinai, reported state media Al-Ahram.
According to Al-Ahram, the New Years Eve attack occurred in the early hours of Saturday and struck an armored personnel vehicle as it was passing by. Another soldier was reportedly injured in the attack.
Security forces cordoned the area and investigators were deployed to the scene following the attack. No group has claimed responsibility, however Ansar Bait Al-Maqdis (also known as ‘Wilayat Sinai’) has been responsible for the majority of attacks in the region.
Egypt’s military, in cooperation with local tribes, has waged a war against militancy in North Sinai, killing hundreds of suspected terrorists.
An estimated 2100 people were killed in North Sinai in 2015, including roughly 1800 described by the military as “terrorists,” 150 civilians, 40 police officers and conscripts, and 140 military personnel.
