ISIS Claims Responsibility for Egypt Church Bombings

The Islamic State (IS) has claimed its responsibility for the two bombings that took place in Egypt during the celebrations of Palm Sunday, according to the group’s news agency “Amaq”.

Islamic State says it had carried out Egypt church bombings with suicide vests; ISIS further added that more attacks are yet to happen.

A bomb detonated early on Sunday at St Geroge’s church in the governorate of Tanta, leaving at least 28 killed and more than 71 injuries.

A second bomb detonated in front of the main gate of St Mark’s church in the governorate of Alexandria, killing at least 16 and injuring many others.

Alexandria’s attack is thought to have been targeting Pope Tawadros II who had left St Mark’s church a few minutes before the explosion.

Today’s attacks mark the third time a church has been attacked by ISIS. In December, dozens were killed after a bomb struck a chap connected to St Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the December 2016 attack and released a video declaring that it would “cleanse” Egypt of Christians.
