Egyptian student Mariam Mustafa died on Wednesday in hospital in Nottingham, United Kingdom following a brutal attack late February that left her in a critical condition.
Mustafa had been attacked by a group of women outside the Intu Victoria Centre, located in Nottingham. She received multiple kicks and punches that put her in a coma for a couple of days before being transferred to an intensive care unit.
Mustafa’s Lawyer Emad Abou Hussein said, in a statement to Youm7, that she hadn’t been properly examined the first time she was admitted to the hospital.
The attack was reportedly caught on tape, showing ‘a group of 10 women’ attacking Mariam before she got on a bus.
“Four months ago, two of the same 10 women abused my daughter on the street for no specific reason. We went to the police station and issued an official complaint; however, nothing happened,” said the mother in a video according to a report by Egypt Today.
On March 14, a 17-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of assault and was subsequently released on conditional bail, Nottingham police reports.
The spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abu Zeid had coordinated with the Egyptian Consulate in London and sent the Egyptian Consul and the Medical Advisor of the embassy to closely follow Mustafa’s condition and provide her with the needed medical care.
Abu Zeid further added that the Egyptian embassy has contacted the British Foreign Ministry to stress the importance of having the British police carry on further investigations into the assault case to hold those responsible of these actions accountable.
