Egypt’s administrative court has ordered the Egyptian government to ban Uber, Careem ride-hailing services following a lawsuit filed by Taxi drivers claiming that these services violate Egypt’s traffic law.
It is not yet clear whether the decision to be implemented immediately or not. The decision can still be appealed Egypt’s High Administrative Court.
Many Egyptians depend on both services as a comfortable and safe way to go around the city. In addition, many consider a source of income.
Uber revealed that in 2016, about 30,000 drivers were using the service in Cairo as a source of income, making Cairo the fastest growing market for the application in the region.
Careem has released a statement on their Facebook page saying that they haven’t received any official notes to stop working; they confirm that they are still operating.
