19-Year-Old Ahmed Akram Makes History For Egypt At World Swimming Championships

Just one day after Farida Osman achieved Egypt’s best ever position at the FINA World Championships, Ahmed Akram surprised spectators and his home country after finishing fourth in the men’s 1,500 meter freestyle at the 16th FINA World Championships 2015 in Kazan, Russia.

Akram, who was the first Egyptian to reach the men’s 1,500 meter final at the World championships, finished fourth at the final with 14:53.66, 2.58 seconds behind Canada’s third-placed Ryan Cochrane.

Earlier in the games at Kazan, Akram also managed to finish ninth in the men’s 800 meter freestyle and 10th in the 400 meter freestyle.

On Saturday, Farida Osman finished fifth in the 50 meter butterfly final. Osman, who had already broken her record twice at the 16th FINA World Champions in the 100 meter butterfly found herself breaking her 50 meter butterfly record when she finished in 25.78 seconds.

Before Osman and Akram’s latest achievements, Egypt’s previous best position was also achieved by Osman when she finished seventh at the World Champions held in Barcelona in 2013.
