Belly Dancer Is Being Sued for Offending Egyptian Religious Sentiment

Egyptian lawyer Tariq Mahmoud has filed a case with the prosecution office in Alexandria against belly dancer Sama el-Masry for offending Egyptian religious sentiment.

“Yesterday,” Mahmoud stated in his report, “videos for Sama el-Masry went viral on social media platforms, in which she announced that she will host a religious program in Ramadan.” The belly dancer appeared in a promo video advertising a religious show that she is presenting during Ramadan earlier this week. The advert, titled “The People of Knowledge”, shows Masry covering her hair with a loose veil and asking people not to judge her show before watching it.

According to Mahmoud, “everyone who saw this promo” was “angered.” He has demanded immediate and urgent investigations into the case, as well as Masry’s referral to a criminal trial on charge of offending the religious feelings of Egyptians.

Meanwhile, social media has been awash with opinions of all kinds, from genuine offence, to people noting her acute promotional skills and those looking forward, with excitement, to her show.
