Egypt’s Court of Cassation has upheld the death sentence of Karim Selim, known in local media as the “New Cairo Serial Killer,” in a horrific case involving the murder of three women and the disposal of their bodies in desert areas on the outskirts of Cairo.

The court’s ruling is final and not subject to appeal, confirming earlier verdicts issued by lower courts, state media reported.

Selim was convicted on charges including premeditated murder, human trafficking, possession of narcotics, and desecration of bodies. The court said its decision was based on what it described as established material and moral evidence in the case.

The defendant’s lawyers had sought to overturn the ruling, arguing that he suffered from mental instability and requesting that he be assessed by a specialized medical committee. The defense also challenged the validity of initial confessions, claiming they were made under psychological pressure.

The Court of Cassation rejected the appeal, upholding the findings of earlier courts.

The case dates back to May 2024, when investigations alleged that Selim, a former English teacher and social media influencer, lured victims to his residence in the Fifth Settlement area in New Cairo.

According to prosecution investigations, the victims were forced to consume narcotics and other mind-altering substances before being killed. Authorities also said that video recordings of the crimes were found on the defendant’s mobile devices.

In September 2024, the Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Selim to death by hanging. The verdict was upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2024 before the case reached the Court of Cassation, Egypt’s highest judicial authority for criminal appeals.
