Egypt’s Minister of Housing Moustafa Madbouly has revealed that 80 percent of the country’s sewage system needs either development or upgrading.
In a statement to the television show Al-Qahera We Al-Nas, the Minister said that EGP 100 billion is required to solve Egypt’s sewage crisis.
In the interview, the Minister also revealed that 75 percent of Egyptian villages do not have a sewage system and that resources would be required to expand current sewage networks.
The latest statement comes as Alexandria and other parts of Egypt witnessed floods that left several people dead and impacted the lives of thousands. At least 25 people were killed in Beheira after severe flooding.
Earlier this month, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi allocated EGP 2 billion for drainage projects to dampen the destructive impact of heavy rainfall that has struck Egypt’s coastal provinces.
