Emmanuel Macron, centrist and pro-EU presidential candidate has won the French presidency, defeating his far-right rival Marine Le Pen.
Macron has got 65.1 percent of the votes, according to initial reports. While Le Pen has managed to secure only 34.9 percent.
Although Macron has won with a decent gap, this is deemed to be the biggest and a historical amount of votes to go to a far-right candidate in France.
Macron, 39, is a former minister of economy and the founder of En Marche! (Let’s Go) movement. He usually refers to himself as an “energetic outsider” who has no political party.
The turnout in the elections has reached about 65.3 percent.
Macron supporters vowed to celebrate his winning in the courtyard of the Louvre museum. However, this area was evacuated early on Sunday after a suspected bag was found.
Macron claims to be neither left nor right, and he is France’s youngest president. He is also a strong supporter of the European Union and pro-business.
