Egyptian English literature professor Mona Prince got suspended from her job at Suez Canal University for the controversy that a video of her dancing, shared online more than a year ago, elicited.
Mona Prince shared, on Tuesday, a copy of the decision taken by the university head Al-Sayed Al-Sharqawy which includes the university’s disciplinary order to suspend her.
Although her suspension took place three weeks ago, it was only reported online yesterday.
Following the investigations the university launched last year about the video she uploaded of her dancing on her rooftop, Prince was markedly called out for displaying inappropriate behavior.
Prince was angry at the suspension as she claimed on Tuesday that “In the first incident of its kind in Egypt, the Arab world and the whole world, a university professor has been dismissed from her post, not because she accepts bribes, or sexually harasses her students or colleagues…or leaks exams…[but] because of the professor’s pictures in a swimsuit and a video while dancing in a galabeya on her own Facebook page,” through a statement on her personal Facebook profile.
Prince has previously dismissed criticism about her behavior, especially when she announced earlier this year her plan to run for the March presidential elections. Although she did not officially submit her candidacy, she drew bulbous criticism that she refuted by claiming that her behavior is a personal harmless freedom.
Prince additionally pledges to take the matter to court as she adds on her Facebook post that she will “meet you in court, University of Suez”.
