Female taxi drivers continue to break taboos and stereotypes. One woman took it even further, working as a truck driver for a 36-tonne lorry.
Um Khaled decided to work as a truck driver one day after she overheard a truck driver and a pick-up driver mocking her for driving a taxi.
“Look a woman taxi driver,” said one of the two male drivers, according to Um Khaled in an interview with Al Jazeera.
“She drives what she can handle,” replied the other driver.
“They belittled and made fun of me,” says Um Khaled.
Feeling like they were doubting her abilities because of her gender, Um Khaled decided to prove them wrong.
Um Khaled, who now works full-time as a lorry driver, applied and took the test to obtain a truck-driving license.
