In yet another all-Egyptian final, Egypt’s Nour El Sherbini and Ramy Ashour claimed the winning prize at the 2017 J.P. Morgan China Open.

El Sherbini, the women’s world number 1, and Ashour, former men’s world number 1, claimed the top honour after defeating fellow Egyptians Nouran Gohar and Ali Farag respectively.

“I’m happy with the way I played and the level of my performance. I had no real expectations today – I was just focusing on my game plan and I think the first game gave me a lot of confidence,” said 21-year-old El Sherbini following her 3-0 win over 19-year-old Gohar.

El Sherbini defeated Gohar 12-10, 11-7, 11-9 in a match that lasted 39 minutes.

In the men’s final, Ashour and Farag faced off in what became a 60 minute final. After a captivating performance, Ashour managed to claim victory 3-2, defeating Farag 11-3, 11-8, 10-12, 2-11, and 11-5.

“I’ve enjoyed being here this week – it’s my first time competing in Shanghai. I always seem to play well in the Far East, I’m not sure why but I feel comfortable in this part of the world,” said Ashour following the match.

The China Open marked the first major event of the 2017/18 PSA World Tour season.
