Egypt expresses sincere condolences to the United States for the victims of the mass shooting that took place on February 14 killing at least 17 students and injuring dozens at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry, Egypt shares sympathy to the US administration and the families of the victims. “Egypt affirmed that such outrageous acts of violence targeting innocents only reflect a hostile ideology inciting hatred and violate human dignity, stressing that those responsible must be held accountable,” stated the statement.
US authorities said that the suspect is called Nikolas Cruza; a former student who unleashed a hail of gunfire in at causing panic and killing many. “Witnesses said that the suspect set off a fire alarm before he began shooting” which led most of the school students outside the school halls while others hid inside school buildings, closets or under desks.
“Many students said they thought it was a drill because a fire alarm practice had taken place shortly before the shooting,” reports BBC.
The school has nearly 3,000 students. Classes have been canceled for the rest of this week.
The US has been suffering from a number of horrific mass shootings. Since 2013, there have been 291 reported school shootings in America, which averages out to about one per week, reports BBC.
Earlier in October 2017, a gunman opened fire killing at least 50 people and injuring more than 200 at a concert in a Las Vegas hotel.
