Forty double-decker buses to enter Egypt by the year 2018 in attempts to ease congestions and improve traffic flow around Cairo, according to Governor of Cairo Atef Abdel Hamid.
The first phase to introduce 12 buses to roam Cairo; each bus has the capacity to accommodate 70 passengers.
Abdel Hamid announced plans to sign a deal worth of EGP 500,000 million to supply Cairo with 130 buses run by natural gas in addition to 150 minibusses. The deal also provides spare parts worth of EGP 120 million to face any emergencies or technical malfunctions.
The Cairo Transport Authority has about 3000 buses.
With a growing population hitting more than 94 million, according to CAPMAS, public transportation becomes a necessity to ease commutes around Cairo and other cities.
In November, an Egyptian private company introduced women-only buses to go around Cairo as a way to protect women from sexual harassment.
