Egypt’s al-Sisi in Talks with Palestinian President Abbas Over US Decision

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrives in Egypt for a meeting with the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi over Trump’s decision to move the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and recognizing Jerusalem the capital of Israel. The visit comes following an invitation by al-Sisi to hold a bilateral meeting to discuss the developments concerning United States’ (US) recognition of Jerusalem the capital of Israel in addition to means to protect the rights of the Palestinians given the current circumstances, according to a statement by the Spokesman of the Egyptian Presidency. In a press conference on 6 December, Trump said that he is determined “that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel”. “While previous Presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver. Today, I am delivering. I have judged this course of action to be in the best interests of the United States of America and the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” added President Trump. The recognition by Trump makes the United States the first country in the world to officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
