‘Dare to Dream Of Freedom’ Billboard in Tel Aviv Protesting Israel’s Occupation

Ahead of the Eurovision contest hosted in Israel, a billboard protesting Israel’s occupation of the West Bank has been erected in Tel Aviv on Sunday near the Ben-Gurion International Airport to greet visitors and tourists. The billboard reads, ‘Dare to Dream of Freedom,’ in contrast to this year’s official Eurovision slogan ‘Dare to Dream’ to protest Israel’s occupation. Avner Gvaryahu, director of left-wing Israeli activist group Break the Silence responsible for erecting the sign, said he wants tourists coming to watch Eurovision to ‘see the full picture’ of the conflict. Prior to Eurovision contestants arriving for the opening ceremony, a group of human rights activists protested outside the event in Tel Aviv. “They try to distract you with glitter and dancing and fun costumes, but we can’t allow culture-washing to distract us from the real issues, which is the Israeli military occupation, the blockade in Gaza and that just last week dozens of Palestinians were murdered for wanting the right of return,” one activist said. The activists sat on the road blindfolded while wearing t-shirts that read “Free Palestine”. The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement has been calling on performers…

The Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker announced on Monday that the annual increase in electricity bills will take place at next July. According to an announcement made five years ago, there has been gradual lift of electricity subsidies from 2015 until the end of this year. However, the electricity prices in Egypt are still less than the world price, Shaker added clarifying that “I am the only minister who announced the date of increases without backtracking.” “Electricity subsidies will not be lifted permanently, current prices are lower than world prices and the state subsidizes electricity by at least USD 30 or USD 40 billion,” Shaker said. The Minister added that the Ministry of Electricity is still in debt to the Ministry of Petroleum EGP 145 billion, and if electricity bills continue at the same prices, the deficit will increase to EGP 36 billion. While the state will support the Ministry of Electricity with EGP 16 billion with the help of the Ministry of Finance, the remaining EGP 20 billion will be covered by the increase in prices. The minister pointed out that the electricity prices are linked…

Egypt to Host Longest Ramadan ‘Iftar’ Feast in the World at the New Administrative Capital

The Administrative Capital for Urban Development (ACUD) announced that it will host the longest Ramadan Iftar table in the world within the last 15 days of the Islamic holy month. This banquet will break the Guinness World Record for the longest table. Currently, UAE-based Ajman Municipality and Planing Department hold the title for the longest feast table since last June measuring at 2,893.64 meters. The event hosted a Ramadan Iftar for 6,000 people from across the UAE. Similarly, ACUD is inviting all Egyptians to come together and celebrate the month of Ramadan, where Muslims around the world fast from dawn to sunset. The new administrative capital was announced in March of 2015, and it is currently being constructed in the desert 45 kilometers east of Cairo. It is the government’s premier mega-project, as the administration seeks to mold Egypt into an attractive foreign investment. It hopes to distribute its 95-million strong population across the country’s vast desert land more evenly in an attempt to decrease traffic congestion, population density and ease the burden on the urban infrastructure. The capital is set to encompass 170,000 feddans, and have a capacity of 6.5…

Egyptian actress and comedian Shimaa Seif faced huge backlash after appearing in a racist scene in the Ramadan prank program ‘Shaklabaz’, in which she appeared in full blackface to imitate a Sudanese woman irritating the people beside her by raising her voice and asking someone to give her a kiss before revealing her true identity. The scene sparked anger among the Sudanese people, who slammed it as “bullying”, “insulting to Sudanese women” and “racist”. https://twitter.com/bebo_bero/status/1126166666872799233 “I don’t understand what is so funny about doing blackface and mimicking Sudani people, and the fact that a big Arab channel allowed this just shows how they are ignorant about this case,” one twitter user said. https://twitter.com/sudanidiva/status/1126793637822631937 https://twitter.com/AbzCaptures/status/1123037966019039232 The incident also led to some calling for a boycott of MBC Masr, with the hashtag “#قاطعو_MBC_مصر ” trending on Twitter. A source within the channel “MBC” pointed out that the program is not produced by the broadcasting center, but that it was bought to be displayed on the screen. This is not the first incident of racism in the media and films in the Arab world, as most recently in 2018, a Kuwaiti TV show,…
